about hewak.ca

John Hewak created HEWAK Communications Design in 2005 to bring intelligent writing and powerful imagery to web design.

Designers are not usually writers. They may offer to write your Web site or brochure, but lacking true expertise that comes only with years of experience, produce unprofessional or even damaging messages. Or they may out-source the writing, passing the costs —marked up—on to you.

Designers are also not usually photographers. They will use stock photography—an impersonal and often tacky choice, or commission the photos and—in both instances—add another line item to your invoice.

At HEWAK, we will write, design and photograph your job, ensuring a seamless and complementary integration of text, image and form. This approach makes for powerful, focused communications that achieve and surpass marketing goals, all for about half of what you might pay at other design houses.

John Hewak has been integrating text, image and design for more than 20 years. After graduating with a Master's degree in philosophy (his thesis explored the relationship between and film language and linguistic theory), he became an editor and designer of medical educational software at BC Decker Publishing, pioneering some of the earliest work in personal computer animations and interactivity.

John's freelance career began at the Hamilton Spectator, where he wrote, edited and photographed for the special sections. Later he proofread and copy edited text books—including titles in law, English as a second language, and social sciences—for Harcourt Brace in Toronto.

More recently, John worked as a communications officer with St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation and Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. His duties there included all forms of communications, media relations, photography and webmastership.

In 2005, John established HEWAK Communications Design.
